When Is Sinus Surgery Indicated?

Surgical treatment of the paranasal sinuses may be necessary if:

  • chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) persists despite adequate medical therapy
  • nasal polyps significantly impair nasal breathing, olfaction, or quality of life
  • recurrent infections, facial pressure, or headaches occur
  • a previous sinus operation did not lead to sufficient improvement
  • a revision procedure is required due to incomplete prior surgery

Especially in complex or previously operated cases, a specialized surgical evaluation is crucial for long-term treatment success.

Modern Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

Functional, Minimally Invasive, and Individually Tailored

Surgical therapy is usually performed as functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS).
The procedure is carried out entirely through the nasal cavity, without any external incisions. The goals of surgery include:

  • restoration of natural ventilation and drainage of the sinuses
  • removal of inflamed mucosa or nasal polyps
  • preservation of as much healthy mucosa as possible
  • creation of optimal conditions for effective postoperative topical therapy

Each operation is individually tailored to the patient’s anatomy, extent of disease, and any prior surgical interventions.

Revision Surgery – When the First Procedure Was Not Successful

Expertise in Complex and Previously Operated Cases

A particular focus of my practice is revision sinus surgery.
Many patients continue to experience symptoms despite having undergone previous sinus operations.Common causes include:

  • incomplete opening of relevant sinus compartments
  • residual narrowings or inflamed cell groups
  • lack of structured postoperative follow-up
  • insufficient postoperative topical treatment

A thorough preoperative evaluation, including CT imaging, is essential to ensure precise and sustainable surgical correction.

Sinus Surgery in Adults and Children

I treat both adults and children with diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses. In pediatric patients, a particularly gentle and functional surgical approach is essential, with careful consideration of conservative versus operative treatment options.
